Adopt-A-School

The goal of Adopt-A-School is to allow Fraternity & Sorority members at the University of Iowa to reach out to the community by volunteering at four local elementary schools.  Opportunities include being in charge of an after school program, helping with recess, or one-on-one tutoring with a student.  To become a part of Adopt-A-School, volunteers need to attend an informational meeting and fill out an application and background check form.  If volunteers are interested in becoming "Point People", they will need to go through an interview process with the Co-Directors.

If your members would like to continue volunteering or begin volunteering this semester, please have them email their schedules to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and return the attached background check forms to 145 IMU by Monday, February 4th so we can begin to coordinate volunteer assignments.

If you have questions about the program, please contact one of the co-directors:

UI Fraternity & Sorority Life Participation in Dance Marathon

Each year, many fraternities and sororities participate as chapters in the Annual UI Dance Marathon "Big Event".  Chapters raise money and dance for 24 hours "For the Kids".  Fraternity & Sorority leaders can be found on the executive team, as Morale/Assistant Morale Captains and as regular dancers.  For the 2012 DM event, UI Fraternity & Sorority Life members raised over $280,000 for the UI Children's Hospitals & Clinics!

Chapter Philanthropy & Community Service

One of the most unique qualities about a fraternity or sorority member is dedication to service. Withing the University of Iowa Fraternity and Sorority Community, each chapter hosts its own philanthropic event to raise money for a specific cause.  Not only do these events make a lasting contribution to our community and world, but they are some of the most enjoyable activities in which fraternity and sorority members participate.

Some of the organizations that have benefited from the proceeds of these philanthropic activities and service hours include:

Children's Miracle Network

Speech and Hearing Foundation

Juvenile Diabetes Foundation

American Cancer Society

Make-A-Wish Foundation

Ronald McDonald Foundation

Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Special Olympics

Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Johnson County

American Heart Association

Habitat for Humanity
